Wine from granite

Enjoy with us! At the winery we have Christmas already the first week of December. Our new granite wine vessel has arrived.

Wine aged in a granite vessel has specific characteristics that are the result of the wine's interaction with the rock, but also with the conditions of the environment in which it is aged. Granite, as a natural stone, has recently become popular in some wine regions for the production of wines with unique characteristics. This type of ageing is highly valued for its influence on the final taste and texture of the wine.

Characteristics of wine aged in granite:

Minimal effect on taste: unlike wood, granite does not affect the wine significantly with aromatic substances because it does not contain tannins and does not have a porous structure. This means that wine aged in granite retains a purer, more straightforward fruit profile and terroir (specific characteristics of the area).

Preservation of freshness and fruitiness: thanks to the stable and inert character of granite, the wine remains fresh, clean and fruity.

Temperature control: granite has a natural ability to retain temperature and moisture, which helps stabilize the environment for wine aging.

Mineral notes: wines aged in granite vessels show subtle mineral notes that reflect the material of the vessel itself. These tones may resemble wet stones, metallic or saltier nuances, giving the wine a 'terroir-like' complexity.

Low contact with air: the wine in the granite container does not undergo such a significant micro-oxidation. The result is a wine that is more 'closed' in flavour and aroma, which is desirable for wines that are intended to age cleanly and without environmental influences.

After a difficult move and settling in, we filled our new container with, as mentioned, Riesling. After a few months of resting, it will expand our portfolio of Walruses.

In total, you will be able to taste 5 varieties, different in character according to the container in which the wine is aged:

  • from an oak barrel
  • from the barrel
  • stainless steel container
  • from a concrete egg and
  • from a granite vessel.

All of our Walruses that we currently have on sale can be found in our e-shop.
