Wine aged in a granite vessel has specific characteristics that result from the wine’s interaction with the rock, as well as with the environmental conditions in which it ages. Granite, as a natural stone, has recently become popular in some wine-growing regions for producing wines with unique qualities. This type of aging is highly valued for its impact on the wine’s final flavor and texture.
Minimal impact on flavor: Unlike wood, granite does not significantly influence the wine with aromatic compounds, as it contains no tannins and does not have a porous structure. This means that wine aged in a granite vessel retains a cleaner, more straightforward fruit profile and terroir (the specific characteristics of the region).
Preserving freshness and fruitiness: Thanks to the stable and inert nature of granite, the wine remains fresh, clean, and fruity.
Temperature Control: Granite has a natural ability to retain heat and humidity, which helps stabilize the environment for wine aging.
Mineral Notes: Wines aged in granite vessels exhibit subtle mineral notes that reflect the vessel’s material itself. These notes may be reminiscent of wet stones, metallic or saltier nuances, which lend the wine “terroir-driven” complexity.
Minimal contact with air: Micro-oxidation does not occur as significantly in wine stored in a granite container. The result is a wine that is more “closed” in flavor and aroma, which is desirable for wines that are meant to age purely and without influence from the surrounding environment.
After a challenging move and settling in, we filled our new barrel with, as mentioned, Ryzlink vlašský. After aging for several months, it will expand our portfolio of Vlašák wines.
