Let's pause for a moment today. Not at the red light, but at the reds. Our reds. Long gone are the days when our fine wines were synonymous with the whites. Times change, the weather changes, we take the best from our ancestors in winemaking, while moving with the times and using the best technology, so it's no wonder that our reds are winning not only medals, but more importantly, your attention. The unique Merlot in the berry selection is proof in the bottle and we will introduce it to you at the end.
A little history
The history of our winery begins in the turbulent 40s of the last century, when our grandfather Ludovit Baláž started working in his vineyards and producing his first wines. The hopes of developing winemaking in the post-war period were thwarted by forced collectivisation and nationalisation. Our family continued to produce and sell wine at home virtually uninterrupted, but it was not until after 1989 that winemaking really began to develop. We founded the wine company as you know it today in 1995. We understood that we couldn't do without our own vineyards. The experience of our grandparents helped us a lot, without their great contribution we would not have started planting. The knowledge of the place and the wisdom gained through daily work is a gift that we still draw on as a family winery. Frankincense was our first blue variety, which we planted ourselves in 2002. As a result, we now have very high quality grapes from a 22 year old hectare vineyard. Likewise with the refined Pinot Noir, we have a half-hectare 21-year-old vineyard that regularly matures into a selection of grapes. In 2023, we harvested a virgin crop from our own Merlot planting. Our Nativa is rare in that it was planted by our grandfather, at a time when this now modern interspecific variety was not yet listed in the varietal book. The quarter-hectare vineyard gives us beautiful, fruity Cabernet-type wines with a distinctive colour.
Nativa
You have a unique opportunity to taste it from a 20 year old planting.
Nativa (former name Kaberon) is a late, interspecific (also PiWi or resistant) grape variety intended for the production of red wines. The variety was bred by the collective of breeders Resistant Velké Bílovice under the leadership of the legend of our winemaking Prof. Vilém Kraus and was entered into the State Variety Book in 2010.
Vintage 2022
We currently have red wines from the 2022 vintage on sale. It was a mainly dry and warm vintage. During it, relatively little rainfall fell, so the vines avoided fungal diseases. The grapes were healthy, with higher sugar content and lower acidity. An ideal vintage for blue varieties. So exceptional that the Merlot ripened until the berries were picked.
Unique Merlot
Thanks to perfectly ripened grapes, we can offer you this delicacy. In a half-litre bottle you will find a semi-sweet Merlot ripened until the berries are picked. Velvety, with flavours of fudge and milk chocolate and exotic spices, it will charm you or make an ideal gift.
Tannowitz series
The Tannowitz range is our top range of wines, from the best vineyards and locations. We only make wines for this range in the best vintages, so it's no surprise that we now offer Merlot and Pinot Noir from the 2022 vintage in this range.
Whether you choose our classic Franka or Merlot and Ruland Blue in any of our lines, we are pleased to offer you red wines made from quality, mature grapes. We are confident that you will be delighted with them.
