The Story of the Dunajovský Vlašák

Dunajovský Vlašák

It is the story of a wine that has a clear origin, yet transcends the boundaries of individual wineries. Wines from a single grape variety, with a distinctive soil type, climate, and a community of neighbors that views competition as a driving force for collaboration.

The Dunajov Hills‍

It is an open association of winemakers from the villages of Březí u Mikulova and Dolní Dunajovice, who produce wine from grapes grown within the cadastral boundaries of these two villages in the Podpalavie region. The main idea behind the association’s creation was the desire to bring together winemakers from these two wine-growing villages, to share, inspire, and enrich one another, and to offer customers more than just a typical local product.

We, the Baláž family, are proud members of this association, and we are pleased that we can now offer you not only our Dunajovský Vlašák, but also a limited-edition collection of the association’s Vlašák.

Spolkový Vlašák 2022, Moravian Regional Wine, Dry

: Limited edition and limited quantity—you won't find it on our website or in our price list, because we only have 60 in stock.

One of the peaks of the Dunajov Hills. A 15-piece mosaic assembled by 15 winemakers from our association. The bottle thus captures the essence of all the terroirs, creating a unique wine. The fruitiness, floral notes, body, structure, minerality, and complexity of our vineyards.

Our Dunajovský Vlašák 2022, late harvest, dry.

The association’s event is a limited-edition affair; this is our annual contribution. Each member of the association will present to the others a Welschriesling that is typical of the Dunajov Hills. All participating winemakers will decide, through evaluation and tasting of the submitted samples, whether a wine is eligible to bear the association’s label. You can then purchase these selected wines, which are labeled with a shared label and the logo of the specific winery. We are delighted to present ours to you.

Friendship Agreement between the Winemakers of Březí and Dolní Dunajovice:

  • grapes of the Ryzlink vlašský variety
  • grapes from select vineyard plots in the municipalities of Březí and Dolní Dunajovice
  • Limited yield—a maximum of 2 kg of grapes per vine
  • minimum sugar content of the grapes: 19.0 °ČNM
  • The mash must be left to stand for at least 6 hours before pressing
  • without the use of enzymes
  • Produce Vlašák either in a wooden barrel or in a stainless-steel tank, then age it for at least 4 months on fine lees, during which time the wine is stirred—the goal is to minimize the wine’s total sulfur content as much as possible
  • Produced under the ongoing supervision and inspection of the participating winemakers

And finally, a question for Jiří Baláž: Why did we decide to become members of the Association as well?

“Because we’re friends first and foremost, and our club’s motto is ‘Friends share everything.’ That’s why.”

Welcome, friends of fine Welschriesling—you’re always welcome here in Dolní Dunajovice. And we mean it: July is Open House Month at our winery.
