history has matured like wine

The history of the family winery Baláž begins in the interwar period and the turbulent 40s of the last century, when our grandfather Ludovit Baláž began to work on his vineyards and produce the first wines.

1948 - 1989

Great expectations and hopes for further development of the wine industry in the post-war period were interrupted by forced collectivisation and nationalisation. Only a small amount of wine could be produced for own consumption, and private farming completely disappeared. In our family, the production and sale of wine continued virtually uninterrupted at home, but winemaking only really began to develop after 1989.

1989 - 1995

The resumption of wine production under the Baláž winery brand started practically right from 1989 and we started with the production of cask wine. We produced wine only from grapes purchased from our contractual partners.

1995 - 2001

We founded the wine company as you know it today in 1995. Initially, we made wine in our father's cellar. Later in a ground floor hall, which we gradually renovated and equipped with modern technology. Until 2001 we produced wine only from grapes bought from growers in Dolní Dunajovice. We understood that we could not do without our own vineyards. So we started planting and buying vineyards in Dolní Dunajovice, with our own planting of locally proven and recognized grape varieties. The experience of our parents helped us a lot here, without their great contribution we would not have started planting. The knowledge of the place and the wisdom gained through daily work is a gift that we continue to draw on as a family winery.

2001 - today

Currently, due to the increasing quality of wines and interest in Moravian wines, we focus mainly on bottled wines, which account for more than 70% of our production. In 2019, we renovated the former agricultural area in Dolní Dunajovice. This created a modern facility for our winery. At the same time, we can welcome you, our dear customers, and show you how your wines are made and allow you to buy our entire current range. We proudly carry on the family tradition, so you can be sure to meet us in person when you arrive. We live for wine, but we've also thought of those who can't get to us, so you'll find detailed and up-to-date information about us not only on our website, but also on social media.

We are a winery of white wines

A fact that we derive from the nature of the natural soil and climatic conditions of the Mikulov wine sub-region, which has unique conditions for growing white varieties. We put emphasis on local traditions and history, as well as the experience of our ancestors who have devoted themselves to typical and practice-proven varieties and wines that are still of the highest quality in local vineyards today.

Sustainability and authenticity of wines

We strive to process and produce all of our wines with the utmost care and minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and in the wine itself. Our aim is to produce authentic wines that have a clear, natural and unique expression and sensory characteristic of the vineyards from which they come.

Unique Vlašák, Rýňák and Veltlín

The flagships of the winery include Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and the increasingly popular and sought-after Pálava. We do not forget about new varieties, which we carefully select not only according to your preferences, but above all to the character of our vineyards. Resistant varieties allow us to minimize intervention in the vineyard itself. Of course, we also want to satisfy lovers of blue varieties, especially Pinot Noir and Franconia, from which we also produce rosé wines. New for 2023 is sparkling wine, the production of which has a historical tradition in our region.

The experience of our ancestors

Working in the vineyards and thanks to the experience of our ancestors, we have discovered that individual vineyards and even parts of them produce grapes and wines of different quality and character. Certain varieties thrive better in different locations and produce wines with unique character. These wines of high quality and unique character, characteristic of us and our region, can be found in the range labelled Balaz.
